Copper SFP Modules

An RJ45 port that plugs into an optical cage: copper SFP for the drops that are still copper.

A copper SFP module converts an SFP cage into a gigabit RJ45 port. It is the diplomat of the optics catalogue: it lets an all-optical switch serve a legacy copper drop, gives a fiber network card a copper management port, and keeps old structured cabling useful inside an otherwise optical design. GRT includes copper modules in its transceiver family for these mixed-media realities.

Two physical facts govern their use. First, reach is the copper rule — the 100-metre structured-cabling limit applies, not fiber distances. Second, copper modules draw more power and run warmer than optical ones, so switch cage power budgets matter in fully populated chassis. Within those limits they are problem-solvers: management networks, console servers, timing and control drops, and transitional wiring during migrations.

Common uses

What speed does a copper SFP run?

Gigabit over RJ45 is the standard class for copper SFP. It will not turn a cage into a 10G copper port — that is a different, hungrier module class.

Do copper modules work in SFP+ cages?

Generally yes at gigabit rates, subject to host support for the module type and its power draw. Confirm your chassis with us.
