SFP+ is the 10-gigabit generation of the pluggable family, in the same shell as gigabit SFP but with electronics rated for 10G signalling. GRT SFP+ transceivers cover the two fiber disciplines that carry almost all 10G traffic: multimode for in-rack and in-row runs, and single-mode for risers, campus links and anything that leaves the room.
At 10G the alternative to optics deserves a mention: inside a rack, a DAC assembly is usually cheaper and draws less power than two modules and a patch cord. GRT sells both, and the honest rule is distance — DAC to about the length of a rack row, optics beyond it. Our DAC versus AOC versus transceiver guide works the comparison in numbers.
Typical deployments
- Server uplinks to top-of-rack switches (with 10G SFP+ NICs)
- Storage network connections
- Inter-switch links within a hall (multimode) and between buildings (single-mode)
Can an SFP+ module run at 1G?
Many SFP+ modules and hosts negotiate down to gigabit. Behaviour is platform-specific — tell us your host model and we will confirm.
Single-mode or multimode for 10G?
Under a few hundred metres on existing OM-grade multimode plant, multimode is economical. For new plant or longer runs, single-mode is the durable choice.
